6 Gardening Trends That Dominated the Largest Flower Show in the US

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society sponsored the Philadelphia Flower Show this year, which showcased a variety of gardening trends, including bold floral structures, nostalgia-inspired landscapes, and dried flowers.

The theme of the 2025 Exhibition was “Gardens of Tomorrow”, and it focused on creating tranquil spaces that emphasize sustainability, structure, serenity, and calm. Here are some of the top trends to incorporate into your garden.

Nostalgic Florals and Landscapes

Designers combined natural elements such as meadow fields with modern features to create tech-free refuges that evoked memories of childhood. PHS forecasts that nostalgic, whimsical blooms like sweetpeas, daisies, and delphiniums will also make a return, as will floral staples such as mums, carnations, marigolds, and carnations.

A theme was also the use of colour palettes in soft, desaturated shades like butter yellows or muted pastels. These colours harken back to the past, and these colour schemes bring warmth and calm to floral designs.

Natural Wood Elements

Landscape design will be dominated by raw, unrefined wood elements, such as roots, trunks, and branches. These elements are used to create bold sculptural shapes that celebrate nature and advance sustainable design. Designers are also using moss to create lush and meditative spaces.

Structural floral designs

The PHS has seen a trend towards modern floral displays that combine floral elements with architectural structures such as tree crowns and branchwork.

Serene Gathering Spaces

PHS believes that gardens will remain places to unplug from technology, reflect, and reconnect with each other and nature. Water features, such as tranquil pools and fog machines, are part of this design strategy. These elements are no longer viewed as decorative but as soothing structures.

Dried Flowers

Dried flowers will no longer be a niche design trend. They are expected to become an essential element. Floral arrangements can benefit from the texture, permanence and modernity of high-quality preserved flowers. These timeless flowers are being reimagined, adding sophistication and character to contemporary designs.

Vibrant Blooms

Designers combine different plant types—perennials, tropicals, and annuals—to create gardens that are visually stunning and resilient to seasonal changes. Ranunculus, especially the unique butterfly variety, anemones, and snapdragons are becoming more popular for their distinct color variations and seasonality.
